Hm, has it always been there and I never noticed it or did it just appear since I put the extra 8GB memory in and initiated FileVault. I can hear a small, almost inaudiable tapping from the back of the computer when ever I use anything. Could it be bad or is this normal?

Recently installed MS Outlook 2011? The "no new mail" alert sounds a lot like a faulty hard disk click. Drove me mad for days.

Sorry, I didn't mention, it's on the iMac.

Yeah, I just saw it too.
What exact iMac do you have?

And do you have a current backup yet? Maybe the HDD is failing?

Sounds like a very very faint finger tapping on the casing in a non rhythmic way. Could be the HD needle and I can only hear it because the rest of the computer is so quiet?

...it stopped.

Could it have been the machine warming up?

I'm listening now, wondering if it could even have been the desk, bah!
