Clicking on the desktop = open application

I use Path Finder 4 to replace the finder, so I don't have a desktop. I'm used to clicking the desktop to switch to the finder, and hitting command + N to open a new finder window when I want to access a file on my computer; I would like to find an application or hack to bring an application to the front when you click the desktop (specifically so I can bring the Path Finder to the front when I do so). Anybody know of such a thing?
