clicking sound (from HDD? fan?)

my MBA has just started emitting a rhythmic clicking or soft buzzing sound; about 20 clicks in rapid succession, say within the space of a second, about a 5 second gap and then repeat. Clean restart made no difference. very noticible in a quiet environment.

oh wait, the fan just came on and the sound went away; a stuck fan?

anyone had a problem like this? All latest firmware updates applied.
