Clicking Sounds..

For some reason, I'm getting periodic clicking sounds from my mac. They sound kind of like the click you get on Windows. Anyone have any idea over what they are?

Is it some kind of systems sound (ie. can you mute it) or a mechanical sound (like the HD is making when in danger of failing)?

What kind of Mac do you have and do they come at random times, or whenever you do a certain thing?

I've been hearing some clicking/skipping sounds whenever I open up an app or when the fans are spinning madly, I hear it. BTW I have an iMac G5 Rev B.

For some reason, it's gone now.
It seemed to be a software sound - it sounded too artificial.
It happened when I was fooling around with the Universal Preferences.
