For a while now my MacBook has had a problem with its clock stopping. It will stop ticking for periods of time ranging from half a second to 3 or four minutes, then snap to the correct time. Once freezing has started, it usually keeps on freezing intermittently for the next few hours. Mousing over the menu bar gives the pinwheel of doom. Some other programs work fine while the clock is frozen, but others (especially games) will freeze up as well.

Sometimes the sound cuts out at the same time, leaving the menu icon grayed out. Sometimes plugging in headphones fixes the clock.

Other people with similar problems traced it back to the firewire port, but I haven't used firewire for years. I have no menu bar extras. Rebooting has no effect.

Any suggestions on fixing it?
