clock/time sync issue

has anyone run into this issue with their MBA/MBP? I have this situation where the time drifts significantly when the MBA (in my case) is left alone for 6+ hours. And it appears the clock does not sync up till I open the time preferences setting. I cannot determine if it is a hardware issue or a software one. And I am not sure if it is M1 specific, but that's the device with this issue.

Is it the menu clock or some clock display that is open?
