Clone Ubuntu for booting from Mac

Hi there, I'd like to be able to clone my existing Ubuntu install onto a USB hard disk so that I can boot it from my Intel MacBook. I want to use my Mac on the go but also have my Ubuntu partition with me as an external drive. What's the best way to do this?

I've not been able to boot a Mac from Ubuntu on a USB thumb drive. I think the same issues apply to an external hard drive. You can boot Mac OS X from USB, but not anything else.
