A have a Imac I have cloned the HD using Carbon copy cloner on an external HD. My HD in my macbook just crapped out. Can I install a new hard drive in the macbook. THen clone the HD on the external on to the macbook?

I dont have the install disks that came with the macbook. I really dont want to buy them if possible. I do have the install disks from my Imac. but,, apparently the disks are machine specific.

You can clone the already existing clone back to the new HDD while you're booted from the external HDD.

Insert the new HDD, open Disk Utility to format the new HDD with Mac OS Extended as a file system (format) and GUID as partition table.

You can also get replacement Restore DVDs from Apple for 15 to 30 to 50 € or the Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD (which does not need a previous installation of Mac OS X anyway).

Format Your Hard Drive Using Disk Utility
