My MBP will arrive tomorrow. I made a clone of my old MBP's drive using Chronosync which I plan to use to get the new MBP exactly the same.

I have 10.13.6 on my old MBP. Can anyone who has received a new MBP lately tell me if it comes with the update or if you have to update it yourself?

It comes on 10.13.6 but I believe its a different build, as people initially had problems reinstalling macOS because the version being downloaded from Apple was incorrect. There's also the supplemental update that it may already have (to fix the throttling).

I would restore the data and what not, and not restore the OS from your backup.

You'll need to either manually copy your data or use Migration Assistant. The new MBP can't run off the version of 10.13.6 that's on your old computer.

It’s better to use Migration Assistant and transfer all your apps, files and settings from your external drive

Thanks for the help. I will certainly use the migration assistant. I have 2 choices - I can use a time machine backup or a bootable drive backup. I have both.

Are there advantages and disadvantages to each method?

You should use the migration assistant with a TB3 cable instead of a timemachine backup. As stated above in this thread.

I left home 20 minutes ago after starting migration assistant and a time machine backup. Why would mac to mac be better?

I had trouble with Migration Assistant. Clobbered the machine setup beyond recovery.
Ended up ding a manual setup on the replacement machine.

I just used a USB-C cable between a 2016 MBP and 2018 MBP to set up mine, going computer to computer. Then when transferring my wife’s data from her older 2013 to the 2016, just used a Type-A adapter on the USB-C cable to connect with the 2013. It went well with both transfers. No problems or issues.
