does my macbook pro automatically go to sleep when i close the lid or do i need to click the sleep button in the upper apple menu and then close the lid?

It goes to sleep as long as the requirements for clamshell are not met.

For clamshell to work you must have the following connected:
  • Power
  • (external) Keyboard
  • Mouse
  • External Monitor
If anything of those is not connected, your MacBook will go to sleep.

If I'm going to be away from the MacBook Pro for a while... not too long... say, 15-30 minutes or so, or even a little longer...

... I'll just shove the cursor to the upper-right-hand corner of the display (I have the screensaver set to activate there).

The screen goes black, and I just "leave the lid open".

When I come back, I touch one of the display brightness function keys (F1 or F2), and the display "comes back alive again".

I don't even worry about it "sleeping" ... I just "let it sit there at idle".

Works for me and doesn't deplete the battery.

I usually will hit Command + Control + Q to put my laptop to sleep when I leave it for long periods of time - otherwise I just let it go to sleep after 30 mins (when plugged in).

To answer your question, yes, your laptop will go to sleep when you close the lid. Apple likes to do things in sleep mode when the laptop is plugged in (power nap). So make sure to keep the vents free when plugged in when sleeping. But on battery, it should sleep.
