I just got an SimpleTech USB 1TB external hard drive.

When the external hard drive is connected, can I simply close the laptop's lid to let it sleep? Do I have to eject the device before I close the lid?

Today I just directly close the lid when the external hard drive was running and when I opened the lid again I got a message popped up said that I should remove USB device before disconnect it.

Thanks!

I have a 750GB WD and 500GB Maxtor drive connected by FireWire and when I put my MBP to sleep (either by closing the lid or hitting sleep), the drives themselves go to sleep. When I wake my machine, the drives wake, as well. There is no need to eject them.

So perhaps FireWire is more robust then USB?

I leave my external USB drive plugged in all the time and never had a problem with sleep or closing the lid. Maybe it was just a one-timer?
