How do I close the lid on my MBP without putting it to sleep?

How do I close the lid on my MBP without putting it to sleep?

Unless you have it plugged into an external display (and are running Lion) your MBP will always go to sleep on OS X when closing the lid.

EDIT: There might be some third-party program that allows it to stay awake when closed, but I don't know of them.

Well I didn't know that it won't go to sleep when it's plugged into an external display, how about a TV, will it also work or it's gonna sleep again?

If the TV gets the connection and you close the lid, it will not sleep.

You can wake up your computer if it sleeps by using a bluetooth mouse or keyboard (connected before it sleeps).

I'm very new to MacBooks, but am constantly amazed at the way Apple seem to have thought of everything.

So, why on earth would they not give you the option to run the machine with the lid closed?

They must have a very good reason. Heat issues on the screen, maybe?

You do have the option to run it closed. Just need an external display, then it runs in clamshell mode

I haven't tried the softwares listed above, but there should be [ one can hope ] a software that spoofs the MBP in to thinking it's in clamshell mode w/o it actually being connected to an external display!

If it is connected to a power supply and a monitor, then it will not sleep when you close the lid. That is the default behaviour. There are no heat issues with running it that way. Well, no more than running it with the lid open, which is a different discussion.

Good point.

If you're plugged into an external display "it just works". If not, it'll sleep.

Caffeine will temporarily override your energy saver settings and keep your Mac awake with a click on the Menu Bar icon. Another click turns it off. It will not keep your Mac awake with the lid closed, however.

To keep your Mac notebook awake with the lid closed, use InsomniaX or InsomniaT (rebuild for SL) (fix for 2011 MPBs)

NoSleep also keeps your Mac notebook awake when you close the lid.
