In planning a trip overseas (Japan), I bought a couple of used, unlocked iPhones (12 minis). Before coming back to the states, I would like to offload any photos via cloud storage. There are several providers out there, but I want to look at free options with an iOS app. Thinking about MEGA, but not sure how good it will be to download files from it onto a desktop once home.

Anyone use this cloud storage before? I do not care to have CBP snickering through my vacation photos & videos.

Dropbox is free with 2GB of storage (you didn't mention your need).

Another vote for proton. You can delete the app before customs so as to protect your privacy

Proton Drive 5GB free:

For a short time I use to use their free email service, but then discovered that I could not actually delete email. It would go into the Trash bin, but the free version of their email service didn't allow you to actually empty that Trash bin. It was like I was being held hostage for not paying them--so I got rid of them.

All, I also need to consider if any throttling is taking place and maybe just pay for a one month service and be done with it. Not sure what my need is. While encryption is nice, I would probably delete the app just before encountering border patrol and then download pictures via desktop once I get home.

I've been a Dropbox user since around 2009 I believe. Can't quite remember. But the Dropbox app has a Camera Uploads feature. You can set it to upload any new photos you've taken from the phone anytime you open the app - or anytime you take a picture. The option is yours.

Dropbox can be installed on a PC or a Mac as well, and when you do that the Camera Uploads folder (where all the images from your phone go if you're using the Dropbox app) comes right along with it. This is how I routinely use Dropbox to get photos from my iPhone to all my computers running Dropbox.

Alternatively, Google Images is the same way as Dropbox in this regard. I don't use it much, despite having three Google accounts, simply because I got Dropbox first.

3TB for Dropbox is something around $20 or so a month. I pay $28 monthly for an additional 1TB of storage. You can cancel anytime you want.
