It has come to my attention that there is a pretty small group here on MacRumors that follows the Web Design and Development section on a daily basis. We are all busy people, but want to take time to learn more...

Everyone has at least one thing that they are really good at... design, coding, back-end, navigation, usability, comedy, news, etc...

well here's my proposal:
I would like to get a group of 5-10 people from MacRumors only, from users that navigate to this thread, and no referrals. You may be asking what I have in mind for a site - the answer is, I have a lot of different, random ideas, but I would rather have a group that makes a decision on it based on the group interests. This could be a one-time thing with the development of one random site for fun, or an on-going project that could expand into a full-fledged popular site. The possibilities are pretty endless.

Who is with me in wanting to work with other people collaboratively and learn more about web design and development?

Also, what skills do you feel you would be best at contributing, and what skills would you like to learn more about?

I'd be willing to chip in a bit, as time permits.

I'll be scarce this upcoming week/weekend, but after that I'll have some time.

[edit - Forgot to list my possible contributions and interests:
(X)HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL
Navigation/Usability
Graphic design ]

I guess I should reply to my own...

I would like to contribute creativity in the design, layout, color scheme, and graphics.

I would like to learn more about coding and back-ends with php and mysql.

It could be fun.
But as Rower says, as time permits. I have quite a bit o'work for the next month

I have basic HTML/CSS/PHP/MySQL skills and would like to improve my knowledge.

I also know my way around Photoshop and Illustrator.

I'd be happy to chip in on code, contents and graphics...

[edit: typos. Don't count on me for spelling!]

[edit some more: I can also localize any content in French...]

sounds like it could be really interesting! i've always thought the web forum had one of the best micro-communities here, if you will. i actually get a little bummed when someone answers a question before i've had a chance to. (assuming it's something i know the answer to, of course.)

unfortunately, there haven't been a lot of php/mysql/general coding questions lately, which i guess is my strongest area. i'd be down to contribute in that aspect.

mnkeybsness, i'd like to hear some of your ideas.

I have absolutely no time :D

But I do have a bunch of things in the works and being part of this group would help push me to get some of them done.

Count me in....

Flash
3D Flash
Design
Photoshop/Image Ready (all those damn 'tars....)
Interactive Stuff
Video
Animation

I've worked with Rower on a few things already and its been good so far - if this thing keeps its momentum it could be great :D

okay i would like to clarify some things on my little vision, so to speak...

this is by no means a project that i would expect anyone to put aside any of their current things. it's more of a spare time - fun - learning experience type project.

i don't want anyone to feel that one person is the head of the project... sure, maybe some will volunteer more responsibility than others and that's cool, but i want it to truly be a group work. i'm planning on setting up phpgroupware to help the entire process for organization and so everyone can keep tabs on eachother.

as a general idea, i, personally, would like to make some type of humorous site with lots of different content from all sorts of mediums... feel free to pitch more ideas... i will be contacting people that have expressed interest soon i hope... you can also try and catch me on ichat/aim...

I just had another idea.. for the benefits of the Mac community...

a site dedicated for tutorials and how-to's for all kinds of mac stuff... articles could be submitted by anyone and approved by a volunteer moderator staff...

That could be useful in that it could avoid people posting threads about problems/questions that have already been discussed/solved...

Then again, I don't think we want to be competing with MR too much ;)

Still, it's a good idea worth some reflexion...

mnkeybsness, have you heard of http://www.macosxhints.com? sounds like what you were hinting at.

but whocares is right too that i don't think we should try competeing with MR.

but perhaps some sort of cross between the two, such as this:

i like http://www.macosxhints.com but have always found there site to not be very well organized (as with a lot of sites out there now)... perhaps a nice to look at and easy to navigate place where Mac users can come to find articles on tips and tricks for Mac and Mac-related things written by other Mac users. There could be a section for tips and tricks articles and say another for user asked questions.

another nice feature might be a live chat room of some sorts? i dunno, just throwing my tired cents out of the table.

Id be willing to give it a go if its a go you know.

My contribution with out a doubt would be the "artistic" side of the project. My strength is in art, theme, theory, concept etc. etc. I also have some strength in layout, color scheme and a good design sensibility. I know you said (mnkeybsness) that your strenghts or contributions would be generally in the same area so at least I can provide a second opinion in your area or some added help... whatever. Whatever the case I am willing to help out and I do need and want to learn site animation (flash) being that i've only had expierence with static web pages.

Maybe focus on humor - and work the coding and art correctly to make it interactive. That way its not just a another tutorial site, but one with original content that people like to visit :D

And we could always have a "How'd we do that?" section....

so exactly how does the groupware work? I saw rower's comment on the wiki section, tried to add my own and got errors....

D

You gotta watch out for apostrophes and quotes. The software doesn't comment those out when it goes to insert them into the database, which causes the errors.

I PMed Paul about it.

did you fill in the summary of change?

perhaps i will upload the forums to the site... if they don't work, i'll just put phpbb back on... except i have no time as i am running late for class already and won't be around till about 11PM

I don't have many skills to add (basic html, photoshop, video), but do have a great interest in learning more! (css, php, and everything else...)

I do think a "How did we do that?" section would be a great thing. I know I would be checking it out quite often.

sorry for the trouble.

yeah, always causing trouble now aren't you?

Now if we set up a art section, I think we should have some guidelines there - starting with Krossfyter is not allowed to post pics of his girlfriends :p
