doubt theres many college students planning to do this deal since most are already back at college but...
the promotional is now reduced to $209 rebate from $299 due to new price of 8gb ipod touch (which wasnt reduced as much as i thought)... interesting...

Makes perfect sense to me.

So if we buy a new iMac with the "Back to School" deal, do we get the new Touch released today, or the "old" one from yesterday?

according to the apple store at the gateway in salt lake city, the student discount includes the old ipods, not the new ones.
as a college student thats been holding out for updates, i thought i'd call to ask.
not that it would have changed my decision to wait for updates...

Actually, I don't think you can get the new touch w/ the back to school rebate offer.

Rebate offer: 209
8GB New touch: 229

Also from Apple's website:
The iPod models introduced on September 9, 2008 are not eligible for this promotion. iPod classic and iPod shuffle are also not eligible.

Glad I got mine.

Apple sales rep (1-800-MY-APPLE) confirmed this offer is only for the old iPods and iPod Touches.
