I was wondering what the best color calibrator is?

Also, do you have to keep them connected to the computer or can you calibrate and put it back in the box?

I understand that you asking for monitor calibration. If so, to answer your first question: it depends how much want to spend. Good ones cost over $400. Provide the maximum $$$ you can spend first :)

Answering your 2nd question: you connect the tool only for calibration. No need to have it pluged in all the time.
 
I use Colorvision Spyder Pro, Use it at the end of every month, it does a good job, and I'm very happy with the results :)
Also look at the Pantone Huey another good product,
But you don't leave them connected unless your using a kit with a light sensor so your monitor stays calibrated at different light levels, google the subject, there are a lot of sites talking about monitor calibration ;)
