is there such a thing to turn the black and white icons in the finder's sidebar to colored ones, w/o installing 3rd party application?

not sure if it can be done without 3rd-party application. At least in mavericks.

If u want u can try SideEffects for mavericks at http://macmatrix.blogspot.ca/p/sideeffects.html its not exactly an application but more of just a simbl.

you just install and voila! colour icons in finder, no configuration no setup, just install and go. if u dont like it comes with an uninstaller.

the main thing i like however is that it lets you see your custom icons of the personal folders you add to the sidebar (allowing you to get around how mavericks and the sidebar icons originally work). you can take a look at the screenshot i added to another recent thread on this issue.
