As a new Mac user, I'm not quite sure what these do, or effectively how to use them. I've noticed them in Ubuntu 9.04 too. What benefit do they offer to organization?

They're just useful for identifying files or folders for whatever reason you want. For example, if I've got a folder of several documents I'm working on, I could use the colour labels to indicate which ones are currently being proofed and which have been signed off.

Hello:

I have hordes of files and folders on my iMac (OS 10.11.1) desktop that I need a color coder on. Do you know if Ubuntu is for the purpose of color coding files and folders? Thank you for your response. -KT

Color-coded "Tags" can be applied using a right-click (or control-click). Tag preferences are set at Finder>Preferences>Tags.
Thank you for your response, but I already knew that. I wanted a more extended type tag, instead of only a dot and that encases the name oof file or folder as well. Thanx!
