I made the mistake of making a throwaway comment after a family member's funeral a couple of months ago. I said something to the effect of "you don't have to fight over old pictures anymore folks, you ever hear of scanners?". What they all heard was, "I'll scan all 14 albums worth of photos and give everyone archive quality copies on however many dvds it takes."
Fast forward to now. I need a colorimeter and, after doing a search here, discovered that the newest hardware recommendations were almost a year old. I'm going to be using a 2.5ghz penryn MBP connected to either a Dell 2005fpw (s-ips) or gateway FPD2185W (s-pva).
Who recommends which one and why please?
Spyder2 (pro/express) - good reviews here and on amazon.com but, apparently, no ambient light measurement. and is that necessary?
Spyder3 (pro/elite) - newer is (supposedly) better [yeah, right.] ambient light sensor. one amazon reviewer says that the OS X software rewrite is very good. otherwise poor reviews on both products, although to be fair most are panning the customer service. but, if the thing works, why are they needing cs in the first place?
X-Rite Eye-One Display (lt, 2) - mentioned favorably in a couple of posts in other threads here. excellent, though fewer, reviews at amazon.
Pantone Huey/huey pro - pro for multiple monitors. thread from this last spring mentioned quality problems, as do some of the amazon reviews. Are huey and x-rite the same company??? (eh, google answered that one: http://www.macobserver.com/article/2007/08/24.8.shtml )
My first instinct is to go with the spyder2, but would appreciate input by others.
Price is a consideration, but I'm willing to spend more to get the right product. That's why I use a mac and not a compaq. But I can't see spending more than $200 and would really like to hear that the $100-130 range products are satisfactory for my needs. And would be delighted to hear that the $69.99 model would be, but I think that the multiple monitors requirement ruins that hope.
