Colors in Messages app?

I just installed Mavericks, and I noticed in the Messages application that some people have different colored text bubbles. Are they significant for anything, or just random colors assigned to contacts? Some are pink, purple, blue, green, white...

I noticed the same. I think it's for group messages only, but i don't understand why. At first, I thought each person in the convo would get their own color, but nope.

I got this too, seemed odd.
Jus changed senders colour back to clear.

I have been using custom colors in Mountain Lion. Wish they had it on my iPhone!

Its not just group messages. I see it on individual ones as well.

Ah, yup, just noticed it on one of my individual ones too. Weird

Same here, I see blue, purple and grey. I can't figure out what they refer to. I hope someone can shed light on this. I'm more curious than anything!

There seems to be no rhyme or reason with the assignment of colors. So confused...

I noticed the colors too, anyone notice that emoticons no longer show up?
