Hi there,

hoping someone can help, I am currently trying to restore a colour classic.

so far I cleaned everything, replaced caps on mobo, replaced the pram battery.

she turns on with soft start on keyboard with a lovely chime, green light ready to go!

the screen comes on and that’s it, no flashing icons, just a depressing grey screen, nothing.

with a hard drive installed or not just grey .. am looking at a analogue board problem?

Appreciate the help

If the screen is grey, in a dot hatch pattern then probably not an analog board issue.

The chime on soft power-on is encouraging, but it sounds like this could be a failed hard drive.

The model of quantum hard drive that regularly shipped with the Color Classic most often fail due to perished rubber bumper stop sleeves within the sealed section of the drive. This causes the drive to never become ready.

However, with the drive removed, the machine should eventually return a blinking question mark (no bootable system).

It may take a while for it to time-out before showing the question mark.

Try checking the power to the drive +5v and +12v

Remove the drive and test it on an external power supply - does it spin up and then spin down 20 odd seconds later?

Hi Mactech,

ive left the classic on for half an hour now, no change in the screen.

no mouse arrow and no flashing floppy, I reset the PRAM 3 times and now I have no ideas.

it Seems like everything is working (HD not included) but nobody’s home 😔
