Combining time machine with "back to my mac"

If I would have a time machine share on a mac at my apartment, would it be possible to back up my stuff via time machine with a macbook while I am on the road via back to my mac?


Trying to figure out the optimal configuration here, and it seems that right now the best way to go is to carry a western digital passport as part of my gear and use that for time machine.
