Hope I'm in the right area. I'm posting this on Reddit too but I trust MacRumors' users a bit more.
I'm in Chicago. I've recently gone over my 1TB data cap and was interested in unlimited data but it's an extra $50/month which is beyond ridiculous. While chatting with Comcast support today I was told about the xFi Advantage thingamajig, which is $15 a month to lease their modem but it comes with unlimited data. Sounds too good to be true. I've owned my own modems for decades because I refuse to lease from Comcast, but this sounds like a good deal.
I have some questions:
I have an Apple-based household with about 6 Apple devices and two Android (TV and tablet remote for TV). Currently I have a Zoom modem going to an Airport Extreme, extended by an Airport Express which is plugged into an old receiver that doesn't have wif so I can use it with Airplayi — if I use the xFi modem/router, can I configure it to only work as a modem so I can continue using my Airport units?
Can I turn off Xfinity hotspots? I don't want to share my connection with anyone in my apartment building.
Can I continue to download torrents with impunity with my Nord VPN SOCKS5 proxy, or will the Comcast modem somehow put an end to that by closing ports or snooping on traffic?
I get great speeds with my Zoom 5341J and 250mbps internet plan. Will that change with the new Comcast modem?
Since I cancelled my Comcast cable TV I just pay for internet with no extra fees. (Should've cut the cord years ago.) Are there any extra taxes or fees associated with xFi?
Anyone else with xFi out there, are there any other questions I should be asking?
Thanks in advance!
