Ok, so after all these years I'm finally ready to pull the plug and update. Originally I wanted to get the 2020 27" iMac with 5700XT back then but when I saw the M1 performance I've decided to wait. Long story short, because of no 27" iMac the wait got longer and longer so here we are.
Wanted to get the Studio but the noise issue made me wait so now unless there is a heat issue or noise issue with the M2 Pro Mac Mini I will definitely be getting that. Just can't decide what config so was hoping for some input.

I had 2012 rMBP 512GB and 16GB ram - in 2017 I got rMBP with 1TB and 16GB ram.

My usage is mostly light stuff, Dota 2 gaming from time to time and then animation in Maya (for freelancing occasionally)
As I do most of my work on a work computer that I connect to through Teradici then I don't need anything beefy as that is provided. I just need something for my personal use.

Last year I've designed a new project in Unreal Engine and even though my machine was slow with the rendering it wasn't that bad so technically any performance better will be fine.
My issues with the Intel MBP are:

1) Noisy at heavy load
2) 16GB often not enough as beach ball comes sometimes (I have usually about 30 tabs safari opened) + teradici, mail, whatsapp, signal
3) the GPU is a bit weak so Dota 2 I play on low settings.

Other issue is that I battle with space. I have around 20gb left so I use external hdd for the other stuff but I debate having everything on internal.

So, here is what I'm thinking:
1) Mac Mini M2 Pro 10c 16gpu, 16gb Ram, 2TB
2) Mac Mini M2 Pro 10c 16gpu, 16gb Ram, 1TB

I don't think paying extra for the higher gpu count is worth it and seeing the 16gb vs 32gb test and videos it seems that there isn't much difference so I guess 16gb should be enough, no?

As for storage - is 2TB faster than 1TB or are they the same? (On lower sizes there seems to be a speed difference)

Apples SSD upgrade from 1TB to 2TB is $500CAD which is a lot as you can get Samsung T7 2TB for about $300 but the speed is much slower, no?

What is your input, please? Any suggestions appreciated massively

Hello!
I don’t think 1TB from apple is worth the money, you could buy an external SSD.

yeah, the price is not great but the convenience to have everything on the device could be worth it. So difficult to decide :)

Personally, I'd opt for the internal 1TB over using external. Yeah, it can be cheaper going externally, but you're rught convenience is better I think.

For memory, 16GB a minimum, but if you're hitting issues with lots of tabs open, I'd also play it safe and get 32GB of ram.

You'll probably do fine with 16gb RAM and a 1tb SSD.

If you're worried about running out of memory, bump up the RAM to 32gb.

Use an external SSD (Samsung t7 is good, but I sense that there's a "t9" waiting in the wings for release) for stuff that really doesn't have a need to be on the internal storage.

Yeah, I have a feeling that 16gb will be enough for me. Will wait for the tests but I guess it should be ok as the design is slightly different (more efficient).
My dilemma now is either 1tb which I will fill up immediately (currently have 20gb left on my 1tb computer) and deal with some form of external storage + another external storage for backups OR just pull the plug and get the 2tb so its all internal and then I need just 1 drive for backups (which I already have).

Thats my dilemma now :(
