First, a brief introduction, as this is my first post.
My name is Karl Dahlke, and I am totally blind, and I just bought a Mac.

"What?" you may ask.
"Why aren't you on Linux? You surely don't need the GUI overlays of the Mac."

True. I've been on Linux for years.
Even modified the kernel to accommodate my speech adapter.

But my family is not thrilled about Linux, and I'm not thrilled about
reinstalling Windows from the ground up, at least once a year,
because of the steady and inevitable accumulation of viruses.
So I told them, frankly, if they wanted the internet,
they would have to use a Mac. Period!
I'll keep a Windows box off the net for games etc.
It's working pretty well so far.
I have file sharing on, so I can easily see the Mac files from Linux,
and I can ssh in and manage things, and I have the root password
if necessary, though I probably know just enough to hang myself,
so best to stay away from that.
As an experienced newby, I will probably post several questions
in quick succession; hope you don't mind.
This post is, however, more informational than interrogatory.

I wrote a command line editor browser for Linux a long time ago.
Don't confuse this with a text based browser like lynx, which still requires
you to navigate a screen.
This is command line, pure and simple.

The first version was a perl script, and I almost tossed it out
when I wrote my second version in C to support javascript.
I'm glad I didn't, because the perl version runs perfectly on the Mac,
and probably everywhere else for that matter.
It doesn't have all the functionality of version 3,
but at least I can edit and browse in my usual fashion,
with the same interface on both machines.
I also have easy access to some aspects of administration,
like printers and print jobs
edbrowse http://localhost:631
and file sharing
edbrowse http://localhost:901

If there is a question in this post, I suppose I am wondering
if anyone has time on their hands, and feels like porting the C version to MacOS.
I suppose there's no pressing need, since I still do most of my surfing
from Linux, and that's where I need javascript support.
So things are probably fine the way they are,
as long as the admin interfaces remain pure html.

Are there other admin packages that I can "browse",
besides the ones mentioned above?
An html interface to accounts would sure be nice.
My son had to create all the accounts for our family members,
in the usual GUI way.
No problem, but I wish more and more SA utilities would work over html.

I'll pose other questions on other threads,
with appropriate subject lines.
Meantime, enjoy your Mac; it's a great machine.
Great multimedia, (relatively) intuitive GUI, and enough command line
capabilities for me to get along.
