So, I've been working on my flash programming and I'm redoing my site and was thinking what would make it fun....

So, if anyone has any ideas they think they'd like to see - I'm open to suggestions. I'd like to keep it simple at first and work my way into the more involved.

current splash screen/place holder is at www.gone3d.com

for those interested - its all action script driven - any movie clips are loaded by action script - the main file has only one layer for all the script. First time I did that, and it was a bit interesting to get the level of the movies all working together. Just one more thing to keep track of....

Let me know what you think.

So what's your ultimate goal for the site? Is it just a sandbox, or will it be for resume type stuff too?

Will there be content over the background stuff moving around, or will you showcase various objects floating around in there?

As always, good stuff, D - just not sure where you're headed with it. :)

ha, thanks :D

What I was hoping was to have a little discussion on what makes a personal site interesting even entertaining. I'm putting up my portfolio here as well, but I want to add elements that not only make it unique, but have some purpose.

I'm not really a blog kind of guy - and I'm not doing all the very many interesting things that would keep people coming back to read about it. What I can do and really enjoy playing around with is the graphical flash programming. There are a lot of sites out there that have some really great things - what I have planned right now are some flash games, animations (3D and flash) and other experiments. If I get good enough, I'll put up a tutorial section. Also, there's the photo section - that should be fun.

For the movies and photos, I'm working on finishing up a dynamic system that loads the movies/images when you click on a button. The nice thing about this (if you're not familiar with flash and you're saying to yourself, how's that any different than any other web page) is that I can take the movie/image and put it in a movieClip on the stage, without opening another html page. So you're only going to have that one interface. I'll have that up next, I think, with a few images and maybe one or two movies. Although, I might make the two separate in some way. I'll also need to set up the control buttons for the movie.

So, like I said, I like to hear from anyone who does this sort of thing or has any ideas. Thanks,

D

I like the simple design elements. And your page offers that so far.

My only comment as a websurfer is don't over do Flash. Particularly when leading viewers to other areas. Sometimes we just want to see lets say an image.

Simplicity with style is what I want to go for here. I'm not one to put all the extra movie bits the prerun before you get to where you want to go. The only preloader stuff (and minimal visuals at that) will be on the movie/image loading.

I'll have another version with some more info on it this weekend (I hope).

It looks very cool! I love how you've used Flash, but I too am curious what you are going to do with it. Nice favicon too.

Just throwing out the idea, but what if you have the Flash in the background? I was playing with the swf file listed in the source, and clicking on the links brought the respective movie into the background.

With some content, that may look clean, yet complicated.

Putting animation in the background might be a bit much. The current buttons are just sort of place holders - they'll actually be sections, home, art, games, etc.

I'm going to make the 'screen a little bigger and mod a few other things in the frame. Images and movies will open up in they're own windows on the frame - I'll get some test images up there soon so you can see what I mean.

On my old machine the 15 objects that get animated really cause it to slow down, so I'll probably lower the number, maybe even just have one in some cases.
