I downloaded the app "SnapPen" (great app btw) and it has an option to "open in app" and even gives you the option to open in whatsapp and forward it immediately... Is this new? Maybe app developers are just too lazy to allow such communication? I'd like to hear what you think

As I recall various apps offer various options as far as opening something or sharing something with other apps. It's something that has been in iOS 6 (if not even before) as well.

It seems though that iOS 7 is more open

It was actually added in iOS 3.2 for the iPad and in iOS 4 for all devices. Nothing new here.
