So, iPod Touch finally got rear cam. How does it compare to the rear cam on 3GS or iPhone 4?

Cameras, photos, and video
Video recording, HD (720p) up to 30 frames per second with audio; still photos (960 x 720) with back camera
VGA-quality photos and video up to 30 frames per second with the front camera
Tap to control exposure for video or stills
Photo and video geo tagging over Wi-Fi

From the apple site.

I don't understand how it has a lower resolution for still photos (960 x 720) than it does for video recording (1280 x 720).

Is this to make the iPhone look better?

Yes, this is why Apple didn't put the awesome 5MP camera from the iPhone 4 on the touch, it would be too much like the iPhone, probably that same reason it still has chrome and not glass or aluminum.

Yup.

There had to be something. This is it. Oh, that, and GPS. Oh, and 3G. ;)

The reason it has a smaller camera is simply because the touch is much much thinner than the iphone that is the reason why the better camera is not in it. IT CAN'T FIT. And there is no reason why it should be made as thick as the iphones because the touch is supposed to be thinner.

It's about 2mm thinner than the iPhone. I'm sure its simply disabled, the camera probably has the same functionality.

The rear camera shoots stills in 0.6MP. Not even 1MP. I'm assuming the sensor is only 720P and can't shoot any higher and then crops to a standard picture size as standard photos are not 16:9. Would be nice if they let use use the full sensor to get 0.9MP
Side note. For an HD resolution, I never gave it much thought that 720P was less than 1MP. Hmmmmm Go figure.

i think it's the same as the iphone 4 camara..it just don't have flash and 5x zoom
but same quality
