when comparing the new 40mm to the old 42mm, would you say that the display area are about the same size?

Yes

But in reality 42 will often display more due to Apple's guidelines for rounded corners, which introduces margins.

I also read somewhere that the 40mm version will fallback to 38mm version of apps, which has not been updated to S4.

I have an 40mm myself and never owned or seen an 42mm in real life, but I played with the xcode emulator to compare the different display-sizes side by side.

Awesome. Thank you for this information.
I just might have to return my series 3 42mm and purchase the s4 40mm. It's a big price jump since I got 42mm for $229, but might be worth the extra $170.
I think I'm so used to smaller watches, pebble and Fitbit, but don't like the older 38 look.

Still on the fence since this is my first Apple Watch.
