Compatibility Confusion

I've ripped a DVD into iTunes format (H.264) with the resolution as 720x480 and total bit rate 1621. For some reason that video and the ones similar cannot go on to my iPhone but an episode I bought off the iTunes Store that is the same format, H.264, 853x480 resolution and total video bit rate of 2090 and it goes on perfectly.
