Compatible Zoom Lens For Nikon D60

Just got back from Malta - Could have done with a a bigger zoom than the one supplied with the D60 (18 - 55) Nikon too dear and as I'm new to SLR, I seem to be bombarded with different recommendations.

Met a guy on holiday who had an adequate zoom of 50 - 500, which wasn't a nikon. Unfortunately, can't remember what make it was.

Any ideas out there

My guess is that it would be the Sigma which you can read about here on dpreview.

Seems pretty fast for the range you get, although I've not read the reviews for it.

Edit: That lens also has HSM so AF shouldn't be a problem. Unless I'm wrong, but I don't think the D60 has AF motor in body.
