Complete Re-Install - what happens to time machine?

Hi there,

I am looking to completely reset my MacBook to start over. I have a set of Time Machine back ups but my intention is to use them to transfer files over, not to restore through Time Machine. So when I re-install - what happens to the Time Machine drive? When I go to set up Time Machine on the new installation, what will happen to the backups from my previous installation?
