Hi all,
I've installed an additional SSD into my 2010 iMac. I couldn't straight swap-out the HDD because of the temperature sensor issue. However, the HDD is noisy and very slow to start up, and my iMac 'boots' it into life every startup/wake up and there's nothing I can do about it. Even though I can eject it upon login to spin it down, every time my iMac sleeps I have to wait for it to power up whilst my SSD, and OS X is just waiting.
If I go inside the iMac, leave the HDD in place with the temperature sensor on it, but unplug both the power and SATA cables - will this work? Will the temperature sensor still read the HDD and prevent the fans running at 100%? Does the temperature sensor have it's own source of power?
I don't want the HDD in there, but I have to leave it there to prevent the fans going! Is there any way I can get the best of both worlds is what I'm asking. Fans operational, but HDD dead would be perfect!
I'd hugely appreciate some answers/advice here!
Edit: Obviously I've installed the OS on the SSD, and all my files. The HDD is 100% empty and ready to be kicked out. This is not a 'startup disk' issue.
Thanks,
Andy
