For the heck of it, I did a test the other day to see if and how much faster it would be to have Compressor transcode an 18GB, ProRes 422 master file to a 4K H.264 file that's approximately 4 minutes in length.
Compressor was configured to use both the D700s and the CPUs for processing on the nMP.
The cMP is the one in my sig, both Macs are connected to my 1GbE LAN. I figured the cluster would be faster simply because of the additional CPU cores, but thought it might be a wash once the time it took to export the master file was added in (Took a couple of minutes or so to export it).
Anyway, here's the time difference. Same project, same output settings. Bigger difference than I expected!
The one at the top was only the nMP, the bottom one was the nMP + cMP cluster.
