My new iPhone has only been authorized on one computer, my work laptop. Just now when I connected to iTunes to install an app, I had to authorize again. Now iTunes says, "4 machines are authorized to play content purchased with this account." Some of that must be left over from my iPod that I no longer have. How do I clean up iTunes?

authorize one more machine so that you have 5 authorized machine in total then go tho the control panel in itunes and press de-authorize all. then you can authorize them again one by one. note you can do this only once a year.

No way to tell which ones are authorized. It's probably computers that you no longer have or that don't exist. Replace the hard drive and it thinks you have a new computer. The secret is to unauthorize the computer before you make major upgrades.

In your case follow the advise above by authorizing the fifth machine and then you can unauthorize them all in your iTunes account.
