I was studying in the UCD library yesterday, and after sitting down for hours I thought I'd stretch my legs and walk through the rows and rows of books and journals. Everyone comes here to study and gets their info online off their laptops, so the actual hard copies and books often seem for mere decoration.
But I went to the science area, and there was in fact a computer science section. (Yippee, my department is recognised! Albeit by about 5 lonely shelves.) There was some programming books that dated as far back as 1973. I opened up a few of them and it was cool to see discussions about FORTRAN syntax and PASCAL compilers in hard print. But what really caught my eye was the UCD Computer Science newsletter box. There were two folders, one of them was mid 90's to present, and the other was about mid 80's to mid 90's. Apparently UCD Computer Science used to publish monthly magazine style newsletters with really cool articles. Software and hardware reviews, on campus computer developments, and other such material. It is very similar to something like PC Magazine today.
I opened up a few of them hoping for some Apple centric material, and I was pleasantly surprised that there was a major love of Macintosh's in UCD back then as there still is now.
I would have checked them out for proper reading, but the library desk had closed that late. Instead I used ScannerPro on my iPhone and made PDF's of a few of the more interesting/apple-related articles. Mind you I only got around 10-12 pages or so, but I really enjoyed reading them. Great pictures of LC's, SE's and first generation PowerBooks in use en masse.
