Hi, This is my first Apple computer ( iMac OS Sierra 10.12.6 ) & my question is :- do I need to buy computer security for my iMac ? ( I used Norton on my old Windows Computer ), Some people say you don’t need it on a Mac others say put one on, I asked a guy at Stormfront ( Apple Store ) & he said you don’t need it providing you install Updates on a regular basis. What would you guy’s recommend ?.

John.

Everyone has a different opinion and sensitivity on this. Unlike the real world, where you can choose where you live and go, on the Internet you are connected to all neighborhoods, good and bad, all the time. But I think if you don't go to sketchy sites and are otherwise careful, I would agree with the Stormfront advice.

Updates keep macOS secure to a degree. kohlson is correct about the web...you can pick up malware here and there but that mostly occurs when you lower the Mac's security settings and install something nefarious.

Just keep a copy of the free version of Malwarebytes on your Mac and run it occasionally and, if you want to install software from somewhere other than the App Store, after you perform such installs.

nambu has it right in reply 4 above.

DON'T use Norton.
DON'T use ANY "virus protection" software. You don't need it.

DO run MalwareBytes at least once a week.
DO use an "adblocker".
DO use anti-tracking tools such as Ghostery.
