Computer Shutdown after mini-DVI to HDMI Connection to TV

Whenever I hook my macbook to a HDTV (sony Bravia 720) using a mini-dvi to HDMI adapter and an HDMI cable, my computer shuts down and continues to restart itself until the cables are disconnected.

Is this caused by the cables drawing too much power?

Any thoughts?

Are you sure you have the right cable. On my macbook pro, I do this all the time but use a mini display port cable not mini DVI.
