During installation of iOS 18.7 on my iPhone 16 Pro using my MacBook Pro (Sequoia 15.7). When I clicked the "check for update" button, nothing happened. I waited, clicked again, rinse repeat etc. I moved the finder window used to update the phone, and there was a dialog box underneath.

I don't remember the exact wording, and I was negligent in that I didn't take a screenshot...

To sum up the dialog: I had the option of installing an update or refusing. I initially chose "no" thinking something was off because the dialog box was behind the finder window. It seemed like something had to be installed before the actual iOS update. I shut down, rebooted both phone and computer. Same thing happened on the next try, and with a second iPhone I have here. I was also concerned that it may have been a spoofed dialog box - yes, I am a bit paranoid.

I have run through what happened many times that my memory of the exact wording and steps is a bit off. I regret not jotting it down when it happened, and taking screenshots.

Could my Mac or iPhones be compromised in any way? I am concerned.

Has anyone seen anything similar to what I have described?

I’ve had something like that happen a bunch. Where iTunes seems to need to download something else using this little pop-up download window that’s unique to this situation. I can’t remember if all the details are similar to your situation, but it sounds super familiar.

Think it has to do with using an older macOS version which may be missing some software it needs to communicate with the latest iOS version
