So let's say I am writing my novel on my MacBook Pro with MS Word and the page size is set at the normal 8.5 x 11. When I send the manuscript to the publisher, they want it to be put into a pdf format with the page size the same size as what the book will be. The final book will be 5.5 x 8.5. After I am finished with the writing, will I think I will be able to then set the page size, but is that done before the document is put into a pdf, or after it is put into a pdf?

I'm not sure you can easily change the page size once you send your novel to PDF. I believe you would need additional software to do that such as Adobe Acrobat Pro. Someone else may know. However, if you write your novel using a page size of 8.5 x 11 and then change it to 5.5 x 8.5 before sending it to PDF, that will likely throw the entire format off as Word adjusts the size.
