Concert AVI videos in iPhoto library

When I sync photos to my iPad from iTunes, my videos are not synchronised even if I have chosen to transfer them too. That's probably because they are AVI format. Is there an easy way to convert all the unsupported files in my iPhoto library without having to manually go to each event in my library, take the video out of the library, convert it and import it to the event again. Further I need the converter to keep the original dates from the source file.
