Conect iphone to laptop

Hiya all

i am trying to connect my iPhone 3gs to my laptop for internet tethering.
i have easily done this before with no problems on my old laptop, that was a acer aspire on windows 7

now i got a hp pavilion laptop on windows vista 32bit

well i download iTunes and leave it all auto install. when thats all done i plug my iPhone in..

says
apple mobile device driver - ready to use
apple mobile device Ethernet - failed

this now will not let me teather, how can i fix this

Are you trying to tether via wifi? USB? Bluetooth?
