I am planning on returning my ipad and just want to be sure all of my data is off of it. I hit the home button and I see the gray screen with the Ipad logo on it. Also while connected to itunes, I get the device cannot be activated at this time screen. Pretty sure everything is off of there but like I said just want to be sure. Thanks.

What did you do to get to that point? If you selected 'Erase all content and settings' in the Reset section of Settings, then that's as good as it's going to get I think. You could restore the iOS from iTunes, which might write over the storage one more time, but I expect Apple will do that anyway and sell it as a refurb.
