Ok this one has me stumped. I'm trying to assign "Mission Control," "Application windows," and "Show Desktop" keyboard shortcuts under System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Shortcuts... [at very bottom]

As you can see, it's claiming the "Application windows" hotkey conflicts with another. When I press command+F3, it shows my desktop, but you can clearly see my "Show Desktop" hotkey is shift+command+F3, so there is no conflict. I also did go through all the hotkeys in Keyboard Settings and nothing there is command+F3 either.

What gives?

macOS Sequoia 15.5

Also, even if I change the "Application windows" hotkey to "-" (none), the warning message still persists! Really bizarre.

There is also an "Application windows" in Launchpad & Doc > Mission Control. On my Mac, that is Control-downarrow.
In Keyboard & Mouse Shortcuts (the window you showed) is also says Control-downarrow.
No conflict shown. Maybe both places should be the same?

It's definitely a bug in 15.5, I see the same.
Go to System Settings - Keyboard - Keyboard Shortcuts - Mission Control and set Applications windows to ⌘F3

It already is (it mirrors whatever I change in System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Shortcuts...)

Launchpad & Doc > Mission Control

Where is this? I see System Settings > Desktop & Dock, but not Launchpad & Dock. The only occurrence I can find of the phrase "Launchpad & Dock" is in System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts...

But as you can see, neither of those settings nested under it are relevant.

And it doesn't work?

Nope, pressing command+F3 shows my desktop. It's like there's a bug that makes it impossible to "show application windows"

I'm on my home Mac right now (Man Mini M4 Pro) - heading to work in a bit and will try it on my Mac there too (Mac Mini M1) that's on the same version of macOS - will see if there's any difference there

Well this is odd. On my Mac Mini M1 running the same version of macOS (15.5), System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Shortcuts... has an additional option for each shortcut: "Mouse Shortcut." I'm using a Magic Mouse 2 and Apple Magic Keyboard with both computers, though different models of the keyboard (A1644 with the M1 and A3203 with the M4 Pro):

And even though there's no conflict warning when I set the above shortcuts, the command+F3 shortcut STILL does not work to show application windows (it instead shows the desktop). However, if I change them to F5/⌘F5/⇧⌘F5 they work as expected, even though the "Application windows" keyboard shortcut then shows a conflict error message:

I'm wondering if it has something to do with whether a function key has a pre-set function. Because on my newer Magic Keyboard A3203, every function key has a preset:

but on my older Magic Keyboard A1644, the F5 and F6 keys are blank:

For that keyboard, you should have the option “Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys”

Thanks. I'll play around with that when I get home and let you know.

I'm a little perplexed, though, why there is a "Mouse Shortcut" option on one Mac Mini but not the other. Not that I want to use a Mouse Shortcut, but I'd like to know the logic, seeing as I'm using the same version of macOS and same mouse on both.

Ok so that worked, but created another problem - now F11 and F12 won't work to adjust the volume (which I use fairly often) without holding down the globe key while pressing them. And apparently from what I've read on google, there's no way to assign volume up and down to a function key (so you can just press one key instead of a combo). This is just asinine.

If you don't want to use 3rd party software like BetterTouchTool,
it is possible if you create a custom 'Quick Action' in 'Automator'.
But you lose the the visual overlay with my method of using two 'Apple Scripts'.

If you create two Shortcuts instead, perhaps you then get the speaker overlay...

An exemplary Shortcut should be linked here:

I'll look into it. Really mind-blowing that Apple allows assigning all sorts of minutiae to a single button but not a major/basic feature like adjusting the volume.
