My son has iPhone 6+, I have 5s, both on 8.0.2. We already follow each other permanently on Find My Friends. Whenever I send him an iMessage, I get a Find My Friends notification that he is requesting to follow my location.
I understand that iOS 8 allows you to share your location with the person you are exchanging iMessages with. How do I get the repeated request to go away? I have allowed it two or three times, but it still pops up whenever I start a new message stream with him.

Check this: Settings > Privacy > Messages > Make certain that "While Using the App" is checked.

Then back out one screen and touch Share My Location and make certain that the Share My Location button is turned ON (likely it is because you said that you & your son use Find My Friends, which you should see there.) Check the setting for "From" to be certain that the devices that you use are checked.

The trouble with Location settings is that there are settings in different places and they must all be correct in order for things to work properly.

Please post an update if this helps.

try simply not starting a new iMessage, just leave the one to your son as an on going message and you will never see the pop up. That works for me and my wife. Plus it speeds up sending a message if the person is already there when you open the app.

This is what I do. I select the person from the Messages index list and go from there.

Thanks for the replies.

I have checked my settings in Privacy etc. and everything is as suggested.

I think this may be the cause of the problem. When I delete a message thread with my son, I get the following message:
'Would you like to stop sharing your location with the participants in this conversation?'. I touch 'OK'. I think that means when I start a new thread with him, it prompts me to share my location again.
It's a little redundant and confusing when he and I share our locations through Find My Friends anyway.

Yeah I wouldn't delete the message thread. Just leave it alone and you shouldn't have this issue again. You can go to Settings > Messages > Keep Messages and select 30 Days, 1 year, or Forever. If you select 30 days or 1 year any messages (but not the threads) will be deleted that are older than that time frame. I have mine set to 1 year because anyone I haven't talked to in more than a year probably isn't important. You could select 30 days and only keep the most recent messages. If you are worried about security then use a passcode or Touch ID.

I think that you're correct in your analysis. Find My Friends is listed as a separate entity that requests using your location, as does Messages. They don't share info with each other.

Unless you have compelling reasons for removing Message threads from your son, you don't have to delete them. They are separated by date headers so it's easy to keep track. I have messages going back a few years from my son who lives in another part of the country. Sometimes I like to read back and remember. :)

When I delete a thread I can also select 'Cancel' when asked if I want to stop sharing my location. The thread is still deleted, but presumably I won't be prompted to share again.
Either way, I think I know how to deal with it - thanks.
