iPod touch Confused about Ipod Touch 3G

I was looking at the Ipod Touch 3G. In a photo on the back of the Ipod Touch 64Gb is a black area. What is it for and was this on the prev. gen models?

It is where the antenna for the wifi is.

yes it was on both previous generations, the 1st gen it was on the same corner but has a right angle on the bottom right (not looking like an oval, eliptical shape like this one does), the black going all the way to the edges.... the 2nd gen looks almost identical to this one.
