Confused as to why my Mac stores 2 files of all media...

Whenever I import a video into iMovie or a picture into iPhoto my Mac stores two files of the same thing. However, one of the files is smaller than the other. I was wondering if it's okay to delete all of the smaller files or if they're needed for viewing purposes... Does anyone know?

They're thumbnails, which are the small previews you see in iPhoto and iMovie ... don't delete them, it will just break something.

Once I have impoted to itunes, and iphoto. I delete all the other files. They are now stored in the itunes, or iphoto library. no need to have 2 files the same.
