Confused Laptop

I tuned on my laptop this morning and a Folder image appeared with a question mark on it. At the time I had my external HD plugged in which I use for Time Machine. I shut down using the power button took the HD out and started again and it worked.

Can anyone explain what happened? I assume the computer got confused as to where it was loading from...

Yup, the question mark folder was the Mac looking for a start disk, telling you it wasn't to be found where it was "supposed" to be.
