Confused Please Help

Hello,

I'm running out of space on my PowerBook. I have some Movies and TV Shows loaded in iTunes. Under my Macintosh HD lists:

I've still got to put 24 Season 5 on, and what I've already download of Desperate Housewives.

I've considered about buying an external HD, but I travel a lot with my college course, and don't want to be carrying an external HD around with me.
I contacted Apple and told them that I was running out of space. And they said that I needed a new HD for my PowerBook.

But don't I just need memory?

I'm a bit confused and need someone to explain it to me.

Memory = RAM in common usage. That's not what you need...you need more hard drive space. If you're not interested in carrying around a supplementary external drive, your only options are to either get rid of some stuff on your hard drive or get a new, larger internal hard drive for your machine.

(That said, you still seem to have a fair amount of space left on your drive...you're not in dire straits yet.)

"Memory" is the stuff that your programs run in when the computer is turned on. Soon as you turn your computer off, that memory is gone. HD (as in harddrive) is physical space on a disk that remains even when the computer is turned off. When you run out of disk space, you either have to delete files you dont really need or get a bigger drive or an external drive. Alternatively, you could burn the films and series you have back to blank DVDs (or DVD-DLs, they have 8.4gb of space) and delete the copies on your hard drive. No point in keeping shows on your harddrive once you have watched them...

Thanks for clearing that up.
I just looked at a thread about external HDs, I had no idea that they were so small for such a large amount of space they have. This is making me reconsider the whole "lugging around and external HD" complaint.

It's a shame that there's not a bigger HD (250, 500) available in newer Apple laptops.

Drives of those capacities in a notebook form factor don't exist. The largest internal notebook drives on the market today are 200 GB.

Maybe someday.

I've just looked at the new MacBook Pros. I'm defiantly going to get one this year. I put it off last year as my PowerBook was fairly new. I think I'll wait until after the new OS X is released... maybe then they'll be some improvements.
 
get an external hdd or delete desperate housewives, that show is terrible. my sister watches it

Maybe... Only 4 DAYS 19HOURS
I'm so excited. I miss out on dinner that day (time difference) and I'm glued to MacRumors for the live coverage.

My fingers are crossed for a new "true video" iPod.
Anyway. Not long to wait.

LOL:D - definitely going for the external HD over deleting DH.
I was on holiday in New York when it started in September. When I came home I registered with US iTunes and downloaded the Season Pass.

I love this show, its just so out-there. And I'm studying it as part of my media course for American Broadcasting.
Season 3 just started here (Scotland -UK) last night. So I'm 12 episodes ahead.

Anyway... this has slightly gone off topic :rolleyes:

You think desperate housewives is 'out there'? I've seen better written porn. Its boring and poorly acted characters are further frustated by the dull suburban setting. It's about thirty years behind the times in terms of its views on gender and written for people who think gay marriage is a bit controversial. It's poorly shot, overly talked about and yet all that would be fine, and we could watch for trash value yet there is the most stupid moralistic undertone to the whole thing. I'd rather watch neighbours which accepts revells in its own conceit instead of that smug and outmoded faux avante garde pretender of a show.
Go watch some al modovar or at the very least 'arrested development' or 'curb your enthusiam'
