"The hotspot capability, which requires AT&T’s $25 2GB per month Data Pro plan, costs an additional $20 per month"

I'm one of the people who got grandfathered into the unlimited data plan, The quote above is the only info I can find on costs of tethering from AT&T. Am I already eligible for the hotspot bc I'm on the unlimited data or am I going to have to pay extra? Can anyone clear this up?

I'd call AT&T.

As long as you are on unlimited you will not be able to get personal hotspot.

To use personal hotspot with AT&T you need to switch to the 4 GB DataPro with tethering plan that gives you 4 GB a month.

Ah AT&T will do anything to get people off of unlimited won't they?

Anyone know if switching to this 4 gb plan would be more or less expensive than my current unlmtd plan?

I realize I could call ATT and ask, just seeing if anyone might know off the top of their head.

The 4GB plan is $45, so it's $15 per month more.

Thanks, this sounds like a pretty lame deal, maybe jailbreaking is worth it.

From my own experience it's worth it if you don't ever get near 4 GB of data in a month. I'm doing it now and enjoy it. I was paying for a Mifi and my iPhone before but now I'm just paying for one device. Remember that you won't be using a larger amount of data because your iPhone already views things the same thing as your computer and iPad.

I have wifi only iPad. If I have hotspot can I implement the hotspot with my wifi only iPad?

And I have a laptop, and 2 iMacs... Can I get rid of my cable Internet and use the hotspot as our Internet?

Yes, you can tether your iPhone to your iPad.

No, don't get rid of your connection at home. All those devices using 4 GB of data a month? No way.

I had planned on getting a wifi ipad and tethering, I guess I need to go back and see how much data i actually usually use.

Over 90% of customers never use even 2GB's a month, so the lure of the
unlimited plan is just the illusion of a good deal.

A friend is giving up his unlimited after researching his use. It averaged
500mb a month. He will be getting an iPad2 wifi model and getting the tethering deal for a net increase of $15 a month for 4gb.

I seriously hope you are trolling. Otherwise I fear for the future of humanity.

So, if I have a 2 gig plan, and buy a WiFi iPad 2 and sign up for the tethering plan, I get 4 gig total. I could use it all on one device if needed?

What I mean is, it is just total usage of up to 4 gig. Right?
EX. - 3 gig on the phone and 1 gig tethering.

Yes, it's 4GB total to use as you see fit.

you will not be able to have unlimited data, rumor is when we all sign a new contract for the iPhone 5 we will lose unlimited data plan..... no more grandfathering:(

I doubt this. AT&T is allowing continued grandfathering of unlimited data plans for the iPad 2. I don't see them getting rid of unlimited 3G data until there is a a good amount of 4G nationwide.

Unless the iphone 5 is true 4G LTE then we will be forced to upgrade to 4G plans.
If its still 3G or HSPA+ 14.4Mbps then you'd still be able to keep your unlimited grandfathered plan.
